Welcome to the latest edition of our weekly AEW Dynamite hits and misses series.
Last night’s Dynamite emanated from Salt Lake City, UT. Adam Page continued his feud against Jay White. Chris Jericho, Christian Cage, Mercedes Mone, and Adam Cole appeared. MJF made a cameo as well.
Here’s what went down on the October 23 episode of Wednesday Night Dynamite.
Hit – Sammy Guevara vs. Shelton Benjamin
Shelton looked like a beast in this match. Guevara delivered some solid aerial assault, but Shelton had the veteran’s edge. It seems Sammy’s job on AEW Dynamite, at this point, is to elevate new signings – and there’s nothing wrong with that. He’s doing a great job. AEW teased Ricochet potentially joining The Hurt Syndicate which, I think, would be great.
Miss – Kyle Fletcher’s promo on AEW Dynamite
Why do wrestlers think they need to pronounce each word slowly after they turn heel? Is this some kind of unwritten rule? Am I missing something? Mariah May did it when she turned on Toni Storm. Fletcher had, more or less, the same tone last night on Dynamite. Let’s see if Osprey recovers in time to take on Fletcher… no wait, bald Fletcher next week.
Hit – Christian Cage gets a new son, or so it seems
I’m a fan of Christian Cage and his Patriarch gimmick, so his getting an apparent new son in Kip Sabian is a hit in my book. At least, it shows AEW wants to utilize Sabian rather than have him sit all day in catering. HOOK getting all tough, only to receive a beatdown, was kind of funny. He identified Taz’s attacker but it came at a cost. (Or did he?)
Miss – Chris Jericho is ROH Champion… again
Chris Jericho winning his first ROH World Champion was a major shocker. It didn’t need to happen twice, not when Mark Briscoe was doing a great job of carrying the brand. The match had some cool spots but the entire Conglomeration not showing up to help Briscoe against Jericho, Big Bill and Bryan Keith was dumb. Jericho winning the ladder war on AEW Dynamite kind of proved his point about Jay being better than Mark.
Hit – Another chaotic ending to AEW Dynamite
The trios tag team main event was solid. Some good stuff between Private Party and Young Bucks to set up their tag team title rematch. The biggest highlight from post-match was the attack on Chuck Taylor with The Elite once again watching from the sidelines. Mox and his group have become the biggest threat to the AEW roster. Who’ll stop them?
Honorable Mentions
- Queen Aminata and Kamille had a physical match-up that was overshadowed by the repetitive botches inside the ring. Aminata needs someone to carry her to a good match, but Kamille wasn’t the one last night on AEW Dynamite.
- Roderick Strong showing up to reunite with Adam Cole was kind of surprising. At least, they explained what happened to the storyline over the past few months. MJF telling Cole he’ll never be able to get his hands on him only to tell him how to get him was kind of a dumb move from a man who claims to be the devil.
