Welcome to the latest edition of our weekly WWE SmackDown hits and misses series.
The October 18 episode of SmackDown emanated from Columbia, South Carolina. Featured superstars included Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes, Bayley, Nia Jax, and LA Knight.
Here’s what went down on the latest Friday Night SmackDown.
Hit – Mr. MonJey Night is on WWE SmackDown
Jey’s surprise appearance was met with a huge pop. After all, he’s one of the most popular stars on the WWE roster. Jey tried to talk some sense into “little brother” Solo. We all know words don’t cut it anymore. Jey’s confrontation with Roman and Jimmy was really well done. The slow buildup is what has made Bloodline, arguably, the greatest storyline in sports entertainment.
Miss – DIY gets another title opportunity, again
Trust me, I’m not a hater. DIY was one of my favorites from NXT’s black and gold era. I think Street Profits would’ve been a better pick as the winners. That said, WWE could pull off a swerve and have Montez and Dawkins turn heel by attacking Gargano and Ciampa next Friday on WWE SmackDown in Brooklyn.
Hit – Kevin Owens cuts a promo, from his car
In my humble opinion, anti-authority Kevin Owens is the best version of Kevin Owens. KO cut a fantastic promo from his car. I believe he will be the catalyst for Cody to go full Homelander on the WWE Universe. The Prizefighter may have to deal with Rhodes’ leader because there’s a certain Viper that wants KO at Crown Jewel.
Miss – Cody Rhodes hypes up Crown Jewel match
Gunther should’ve been on WWE SmackDown last night to go one-on-one with Cody on the mic. The World Heavyweight Champion will appear on SmackDown in Brooklyn. WWE has done an underwhelming job building up this match-up. It lacks the “big fight” feel to it. I don’t mind if there’s no physicality but let’s not kid ourselves with all the fake praise for Cody’s promo. P.S. The belt looks ugly as… hell.
Hit – MCMG are on WWE SmackDown
A former TNA star signing two former TNA champions to a WWE contract. We are living in a crazy world. Motor City Machine Guns are tag team royalty. Safe to say that WWE’s division is about to change, and for the better. The pair have already picked their first win on the blue brand. However, I still think it’s too early to do MCMG vs. The Bloodline.
Miss – Lash Legend vs. Piper Niven on WWE SmackDown
Lash and Piper should’ve got more time here. This is one of my biggest gripes with Triple H’s booking. These two looked like they could’ve delivered some great hard-hitting action. Hopefully, WWE will address time constraints when it comes to women’s wrestling. I forgot to mention, Bianca was looking fine sitting in the crowd with Jade Cargill.
Hit – Roman Reigns acknowledges Solo Sikoa
Roman Reigns may be a babyface, but he’s still the manipulative, narcissistic Tribal Chief we saw him become during the first innings of The Bloodline. He used the same “doing it for the family” line against Solo he used on Jey and Jimmy. Solo wasn’t convinced because Reigns didn’t acknowledge him as the Tribal Chief. That’s mind games from the former Big Dog. The build-up has been brilliant so far.
