Welcome to the latest edition of our weekly WWE NXT hits and misses series.
Last night’s episode continued the build-up to NXT’s arrival in Chicago. The brand’s partnership with TNA continued as more iMPACT stars showed up on the White and Gold brand.
Here’s what went down on the September 10 episode of NXT.
Hit – The Bloodline invades WWE NXT
Axiom and Frazer defended their tag team titles against The Street Profits because The Rascalz were unable to compete. Ford and Dawkins had a great back and forth match against the reigning NXT Tag Team Champions. The pair hit their tag team finisher only for The Bloodline to invade the match. Jacob Fatu finished the job by flattening Dawkins with a Swanton Bomb.
This was a great opening match with a shocking yet brilliant conclusion. Frazer and Axiom put another tag team banger this week. They are just so good together. Dawkins and Ford showed up and showed out.
The Bloodline’s intervention was a huge surprise that caused the WWE NXT fans to lose their mind. Tanga Loa didn’t botch his spot either.
Miss – Thea Hail’s crying
Ridge Holland took on Duke Hudson weeks into his betrayal of Chase U. Holland picked up the win, but continued his relentless assault after the match. Thea Hail could only watch as Holland completely destroyed Mr. Six-Foot-Five.
Holland looked like a monster while dismantling Hudson. That said, Thea Hail’s crying ruined this segment for me. She could’ve done better when it comes to selling Hudson’s beatdown. With Hudson out as well, it seems Holland will take on Riley Osborne next.
Hit – Giulia’s WWE NXT in-ring debut
Giulia made her NXT in-ring debut a week after putting Chelsea Green on notice. The Beautiful Madness (yes, that’s her nickname on NXT) showed plenty of offense against the Canadian superstar before picking up the win with a Northern Lights.
This was a solid debut for one of the best women’s wrestlers on the planet today. Chelsea looked good in defeat as well. I hope to see her win a singles WWE title one day.
As for Giulia, she takes on Roxanne Perez for the WWE NXT Women’s Championship on CW come October 1.
Miss – Finish to Jordynne Grace vs. Sol Ruca
Jordynne Grace put her Knockouts Title on the line in an open challenge, which was answered by Sol Ruca. Both women had a fast-paced, hard-hitting match. Jordynne planted Sol with a Muscle Buster, but the lights went off before Rosemary and Wendy Choo caused a disqualification.
This was a great match that was ruined by an awful DQ spot. Jordynne and Sol showed they have chemistry. Let’s see if WWE or TNA run it back following the controversial ending. Also, why didn’t Jordynne just power her way out of the chokehold submission?!
Hit – Hammerstone vs. Oba Femi
TNA’s Hammerstone showed up to answer Oba Femi’s open challenge for the WWE NXT North American Championship. The two big men went there and beat the life out of each other. Femi picked up the win following a powerbomb.
NXT fans got a taste of MLW last night. Both Jacob Fatu and Hammerstone were at the PC. Hammerstone had a fantastic outing against Oba. This match really makes me want to see Moose go toe-to-toe with Oba.
Honorable Mentions
- Je’Von Evans and Charlie Dempsey had a fun British Rounds match for the NXT Heritage Cup. Evans showed a lot of promise but Tavion Heights returned from his Japanese excursion to cause a distraction. And that Belly to Belly is a thing of beauty.
- Trick Williams is going to Chicago to challenge Ethan Page for the WWE NXT Championship. Trick won the opportunity after defeating Pete Dunne in a brutal Last Man Standing match. Speaking of Chicago, a certain Second City Saint has an important announcement you might want to hear next week on NXT.
