NXT The Great American Bash Night 2 is officially in the books!
Last night’s special event went down at the WWE Performance Center in Florida. The show featured plenty of matches and segments.
Here’s what went down on 8/6 WWE NXT.
Hit – Trick Williams vs. Pete Dunne
Trick Williams and Pete Dunne kicked off NXT Great American Bash Night 2. Dunne brought his intensity to the former NXT Champion. Williams showed his fighting spirit even kicking out of some of Dunne’s most painful moves. However, the Bruiserweight managed to seal Williams’ fate with a Bitter End.
This was a solid match-up that pitted an NXT veteran against the new blood. Williams had some good comebacks. Pete brought his old aggression to the ring. I didn’t expect Williams to lose this match against Dunne. That said, Williams has always been the underdog and he’ll slowly make his way back to the title picture.
Miss – NXT Women’s North American Championship match
The first title match of the night saw Tatum Paxley take on Kelani Jordan for the NXT Women’s North American Championship. Paxley got some offense but was distracted by the women’s title placed at ringside. Kelani picked up the win after several minutes of action. Wendy Choo arrived and handed Paxley a doll before putting her to sleepy.
This match would’ve had a lot more to offer if it weren’t for TV time restrictions. The crowd was pro-Tatum throughout the match even though she’s a heel. Kelani as the NXT North American Women’s Champion isn’t doing it for me. She has the skills inside the ring but her character and mic work needs improvement.
Hit – Ethan Page vs. Oro Mensah at NXT The Great American Bash Night 2
Ethan Page and Oro Mensah finally collided after weeks of build-up. Oro got some pretty good offense against the champion. There were many nearfalls. Page dished some punishment of his own. Oro took some bumps on the outside. Page brought the action to the ring and sealed Mensah’s fate with a second Ego’s Edge.
A pretty decent match filled with some very good spots. Mensah brought the offense, but the crowd wasn’t into this match. Page needs a more popular superstar to feud with following his win over Mensah. That seems to be the only possible way to build him as NXT’s top champion. I believe it’s time for someone else to step up to All Ego.
Miss – Joe Hendry vs. Joe Coffey
Joe Hendry had his third match overall in WWE NXT at The Great American Bash Night 2. Hendry took on Gallus’ Joe Coffey. The TNA star took out Wolfgang and Mark Coffey before the opening bell. Hendry and Coffey went back and forth inside the ring before Hendry sealed the win a Standing Ovation. After the match, Hendry cut a promo.
Joe Hendry is massively over. That said, I didn’t like the match between Hendry and Gallus. It should’ve got more time in my opinion. But, as I previously mentioned, NXT likes to keep it subtle before they offer the full course. At this point, Hendry might even go after a major singles title on the brand and fans would love it.
Hit – Wes Lee turns heel at NXT The Great American Bash
MSK reunited to take on Supersonic Duo for the NXT Tag Team Championship. This was a great back-and-forth match between two of the best teams on the WWE roster. Axiom and Nathan Frazer barely retained their titles. The two teams showed each other a sign of respect before Wes Lee delivered the shocker of the night.
The tag team title match was brilliant. Axiom just might have the stiffest drop kick in all of WWE. I thought turning Wes Lee’s heel turn was brilliant because nobody saw it coming. People thought Axiom and Frazer would implode. Poor Trey Miguel received the brunt of Lee’s assault. The storyline just got better.
