NXT The Great American Bash Night 1 Review (7/30/24)

NXT The Great American Bash is officially in the books!

NXT GAB Night 1 emanated from the WWE Performance Center. The show aired on Syfy since the USA Network is airing Summer Olympics.

Here’s what went down at NXT Great American Bash.

Miss – Women’s tag team title match

Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn returned to NXT to defend their tag team titles. The pair took on Lash Legend and Jakara Jackson. The challengers put on a decent fight until the champions found an opening to retain their title.

This was a decent title defense, but it could’ve been better. The two teams lacked chemistry with each other. Miss Jackson pulled some nice moves to slow down the champions. Lash had the strength and size advantage. They’ll get more opportunities in the future.

Hit – Heritage Cup match at NXT The Great American Bash

Tony D’Angelo put his Heritage Cup on the line against Tavion Heights. The first round ended in a draw. Wren Sinclair showed up to shout some motivation into Heights. Round two also ended in a draw. Tony D picked up the win in the third round. Heights evened the score in the fourth before Tony got the decisive win in the fifth round.

This was a pretty fun Heritage Cup match. The first round ended with both men struggling to pick up the win. I thought that was great. Wren Sinclair brings so much energy to NQCC. Heights’ Belly to Belly finisher is a thing of beauty. Tony used that Ron Simmons’ inspired spine buster to pick up the win.

Miss – Brooks Jensen vs. Cedric Alexander

Brooks Jensen disrespected Cedric Alexander in the lead-up to the match. Jensen dominated the match till he refused to listen to Shawn Spears. The arrogance ultimately cost him the match against the veteran Alexander.

This was a short match that served to build the story between Jensen and Spears rather than delivering high quality in-ring action. What I did like though is that NXT actually made “veteran’s advice” a really thing here.

That is some cool old school stuff and serves Jensen’s gimmick really well.

Hit – Joe Hendry’s concert

Joe Hendry brought his live concert to NXT The Great American Bash. Hendry called Booker T the president of his fan club. Gallus showed up after Hendry called Joe Coffey the son of Dutch Mantell. The trio flattened Hendry setting up a singles match for GAB Night 2.

They didn’t go all out with Hendry’s concert, which I though was okay. I believe Shawn Michaels is giving the NXT Universe these little teases when it comes to Joe Hendry before booking him for a big angle.

Miss – Jaida Parker vs. Kendal Grey

Jaida Parker took on Kendal Grey in singles action. Myles Borne and Wren Sinclair showed up to distract Grey. Myles ate another suplex into the barricade. The distraction, however, cost Kendal the win against Parker.

Give these women time and they would, undoubtedly, deliver a better match. Miss Parker picked up the win weeks after putting on a banger against Michin. It remains to be seen how Shawn Michaels will book the angle between Kendal and Myles.

Hit – Main event match at NXT The Great American Bash

Roxanne Perez defended her NXT Women’s Championship against Thea Hail in the main event. The challenger pulled off a lot of offense against the champion. Their were plenty of near falls before Roxanne hit a PopRox on Thea for the win.

A very good main event match between two extremely talented individuals. Roxanne proved why she is The Prodigy. Thea looked spectacular as the underdog. The submission struggle into the steel steps spot was really well done.

Honorable Mention

  • The penultimate match of the night featured six women in tag team action. Lola Vice teamed up with Sol Ruca and Karmen Petrovic against Jacy Jayne, Jazmyn Nyx and Fallon Henley. All the ladies looked superb in the match. This is the kind of action I would like to see Triple H book for women on the main roster.
