AEW Dynamite aired live from the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. Tony Khan booked a solid show from top to bottom. Fans were treated to great wrestling featuring some of the best wrestlers in the world.
We also got the updated AEW Dynasty match card following this week’s Dynamite. World Champion Samoa Joe and TNT Champion Adam Copeland among other big names worked the Wednesday show.
With that said, let’s dive right into the biggest hits and misses from AEW Dynamite this week.
Miss – LionHOOK forms on AEW Dynamite
Chris Jericho had a proposition for HOOK last week on Dynamite. Jericho elaborated on his proposition this week. He said he wanted to be a mentor to HOOK. The FTW Champion arrived and told Jericho they’d team up on Collision this Saturday.
If you want my honest opinion, I never wanted LionHOOK to begin with. AEW seems to be rushing through the whole storyline. They seem to be forcing this face mentor gimmick of Jericho even though fan reception is speaking otherwise.
Hit – A Rated R introduction for Will Ospreay
TNT Champion Adam Copeland kicked off AEW Dynamite this week. Copeland said he didn’t bring his title with him because he wanted to talk to fans as “Adam.” He said he wanted to talk about the positives. Copeland namedropped Okada, Joe, Omega, and Joe, among others as potential opponents.
He capped off his promo with by introducing Will Ospreay to the ring for his match against Hobbs. It’s good to see AEW capitalizing on Copeland’s status as a certified veteran of the industry and using it to endorse stars who are meant to carry the company to a bigger and brighter future.
Miss – Chuck Taylor’s blank selling of Trent Barretta’s heel turn
Trend Barretta and Orange Cassidy squared off against The Bucks on AEW Dynamite this week. Matthew and Nicholas Jackson pulled off a sneak win to advance to the next round of the AEW World Tag Team Title Tournament.
The Best Friends went into for the group hug only for Trent to take out Orange Cassidy with a running knee. While this was a great surprise, Chuck Taylor’s facial expression, or lack thereof, undermined Barretta’s heel turn on OC.
Hit – Thunder Rosa gets Toni Storm at AEW Dynasty
Number one ranked Thunder Rosa faced number two ranked Mariah May for a shot at AEW Women’s World Championship on Dynamite this week. Both women delivered a solid match that featured plenty of hard-hitting strikes.
The champion, Timeless Toni Storm, was in her usual brilliant element on commentary. Rosa won the match with her Tijuana Bomb finisher. She will face Toni Storm for the women’s title at Dynasty on April 21.
Miss – Jay White loses via DQ
I might be in the minority when I say that the loss to MJF has really hurt Jay White’s momentum. White was, at one point, the hottest signing in AEW. He was booked as a smart heel who could do some serious damage between the ropes.
The former IWGP World Heavyweight Champion should be chasing after the world title. What he shouldn’t be doing is losing matches via DQ. Here’s hoping the Switchblade gets his momentum back after AEW Dynasty.
Hit – Swerve puts blood to paper on AEW Dynamite
It is official. Samoa Joe will defend his AEW World Championship against Swerve Strickland at the Dynasty PPV event on April 21. Both men made their match official during a contract signing that turned extremely violent on AEW Dynamite this week.
Swerve got a huge pop when he arrived. Joe showed up next. Both men did some fantastic mic work before things turned physical. Swerve had the upper hand until Joe overpowered him. The champion then proceeded to lacerate the challenger with his own steel chain.
However, Swerve got up after Joe left the ring and signed with contract with his blood in dramatic fashion. This was a great visual and it truly showed Swerve’s willingness to push past boundaries to get his hands on the world title.
The feud has heated up since the last time both men came face-to-face. Joe got the upper hand this week after he planted his Dynasty opponent through the table to close out another solid edition of AEW Dynamite.
