Former Friends Wage War
Sheamus and Drew McIntyre should have an amazing match on Sunday, there’s no question about that. But they’ve already clashed twice on WWE RAW this month. Sunday’s contest feels like it’s doomed to be labelled “More of the same.” The new No Holds Barred Stipulation helps, but WWE is practically spinning its wheels with this match. If an opportunity at the WWE Championship was on the line, this bout would feel much more important.
Instead, McIntyre has been handed a shot at Bobby Lashley. The two heavyweights will face off at WrestleMania, so this date with Sheamus might just be a warm-up for “The Scottish Warrior.” It’s a shame because Sheamus has been doing some of the best in-ring work of his career lately. Hopefully, he’ll get the chance to fight for the world title someday soon, but he’s been stuck as a third wheel in the main event scene in recent weeks. That trend seems set to continue on Sunday.

On paper, all roads point to a screwy finish to the main event match between Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan. You know Reigns isn’t dropping the WWE Universal Championship here, but it’s hard not to feel like WWE isn’t setting up a Triple Threat Match between Edge, Bryan and Reigns for WrestleMania. It’s the best outcome here. While Reigns vs. Edge is a big money match, Bryan has somewhat overshadowed their feud. Rather than pivoting back to the clash between two stars, WWE could keep rolling with this fascinating three-way dance.
Bryan and Edge are two all-time greats, and Reigns is one of the best in the modern industry. For that reason alone, a Triple Threat Match between the three men would be incredible. Factor in the knowledge that all three stars had to walk away from wrestling at one point, only to return in wonderful ways, and this match could go down in history. The trio’s phenomenal character work is the backbone of this story, and it’s also the cherry on top as to why this Triple Threat Match needs to happen.
Expect Bryan and Reigns to have the Match of the Night at Fastlane. Edge, the special guest ring enforcer, and Jey Uso will both probably factor into the outcome, one way or another. But no matter what happens, this main event should crank up the heat on what has already been a hot WrestleMania program.
