#2.) The bizarre kayfabe-breaking angle
Jack Swagger’s career was seemingly revitalized in the cusp of 2013 and his road to WrestleMania 29 led to a match against Mexican-born World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio. In the storyline, Colter and Swagger had an anti-immigration gimmick, playing off the controversy of the right-wing Tea Party at the time.
The Tea Party responded to the storyline with backlash, stating that it was making them look bad. Usually, in such cases, WWE themselves put out press releases defending their actions. However, this time around, they chose a very weird way to do it.
They both broke character, with Zeb Colter basically bragging about the WWE fanbase and its diversity. He also took a shot at Glenn Beck for being out of touch and not understanding the difference between reality and entertainment. They then invited him to the next episode of RAW and offered him five minutes to explain what he said.
There was no response and it didn’t work all too well for WWE.
