Over the past few weeks, a masked man had been attacking LWO’s Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee. While it was obvious that the masked man, who now goes by the name El Grande Americano, was the leader of American Made, Chad Gable.
However, Gable has been trying his best to fool the audience into thinking that he and Americano are two different people. This past week on Monday Night Raw, a promo aired showcasing the professional wrestling career of El Grande Americano.
Following the promo, Americano also made his WWE in-ring debut against Dragon Lee.
Unfortunately, there has been some backlash from fans claiming that this ‘gimmick’ is offensive to Luchadors. Some people are also ridiculing WWE for using AI technology for the El Grande Americano promo. But really, is it offensive?
Most critics fail to see that the gimmick is meant to be a parody. When it comes to the use of AI, that was also on purpose. The whole reason for the promo to be made using AI was to make it obvious that the video package is not real and it’s another attempt of Chad Gable to make the people believe that he and Americano are different people.
Given how El Grande Americano came into existence, it is safe to assume that this gimmick is another ploy from Chad Gable to understand the Lucha style of wrestling and finally be able to defeat the Luchadors in WWE such as Rey Mysterio and Penta.
The whole gimmick is a parody and meant to not be liked by the wrestling universe. So, to be fair to Gable and WWE, the El Grande Americano gimmick is doing its job correctly.
Do professional wrestlers find El Grande Americano Offensive?
Some fans find this gimmick offensive, but Luchadors and others in the wrestling industry don’t have an issue. Jose The Assistant took to Twitter to share his thoughts on the gimmick. He shared that the character is supposed to be a ‘heel’ and it is getting over in that aspect. He also shared that he has no issue with this gimmick.
“As a Hispanic who worked in TV wrestling. I can tell you that these characters are getting OVER as it’s intended to and not an issue anyone should be “offended” by,” Jose The Assistant tweeted.
(As he notes, how Mexican talent is being used, however, is a different story…)
Some fans also showed their support for Chad Gable and how the El Grande Americano gimmick is working as it was intended to do. Overall, the gimmick is supposed to come off as fake or inauthentic because it is. Chad Gable isn’t really a luchador and eventually, he’ll be unmasked, which is one of the “pay offs” here.
