Cage comments on working with Matt Sydal, plans after he wins the X Division title:
I haven’t worked with anybody too consistently. I did say before I signed that I’d want to work in the X Division and work with Matt Sydal, and that’s what’s happening right now. It’s the first time I’m ever working with him. I’m looking forward to it, [Slammiversary] is next Sunday. It’s a week from tomorrow; it’s a big title defense for Matt. Unfortunately, he’s going to lose the title. As I’ve kept claiming, I’m going to change it to the Weapon X Division—there’s that play on Wolverine—and I’ll reign supreme until I want to step up to another title.
Matt Sydal On Finding A New Perspective In Wrestling, How Wrestling Modernized Itself
Cage talks about the ‘Night Claw’ villain character he came up with in FCW:
So, I’m out there having awesome matches with PJ Black (Justin Gabriel), Tyson Kidd, Trent Barretta, and Dusty [Rhodes] pulls me into the office and he goes ‘let me tell you something, baby; you’re a phenomenal worker, but you’ve got to have something else. You’ve got to have some sort of character. [motions like Dusty is looking to someone else] Hey Matt? What’s that guy called? The Honey Badger?’ and Matt goes ‘The Wolverine’. [And Dusty says] ‘yea, the Wolverine, but you can’t be the Wolverine. That’s a trademark, but you gotta be something like the Wolverine.’
So I went back, and I was looking through all of my trading cards and comics, and I’m like ‘oh! I’ll just be the amalgam—Dark Claw—Batman and Wolverine combination when they had the Marvel vs DC deal. But, then I was like I can’t be Dark Claw because that’s going to be trademarked. Let’s just make it ‘night’ instead of dark and I made my attire off of that.
I was doing promos for it, and they were going to bring me up as Night Claw. I was doing great, and then The Hurricane came back beforehand. So Dusty said ‘OK we’re either thinking about feuding you with or teaming you with Hurricane.’ So first I started doing a bunch of heel promos towards him to be like supervillain versus superhero, and then I got released. So it never happened. What can you do?
