On if more controversial characters like GLOW’s Welfare Queen are missing from the current pro wrestling landscape:

CG: Yes and no. Wrestling has changed and evolved. I am not saying that we can never go back to that. Look at what we did on Lucha Underground, which is written by white guys (laughs). They are embracing Hispanic culture and we bring characters in that kill people. In the new season we have a transgender guy. We keep women as strong as men so it’s still there. It just may not be there at the same level as it used to be in the WWE, but it’s still there.

On the “pervy” way that pro wrestling fans were portrayed in episode five, season two of GLOW:

CG: There are so many kinds of wrestling fans and they are all awesome. They are all different. You have doctors and lawyers and then you have the person that’s there just with their kids a fan. You have guys who are die-hard fans from trailer parks. We almost tried to show that there are all types of wrestling fans.

There was that one episode where Welfare Queen is at her kids’ college (Stanford) and there is a guy with his kid that comes up to her and says, “You’re Welfare Queen! I’m a big fan!” He’s just a normal guy. Who knows what he was? He was a professional guy with a kid in college. There are just differences and we are trying to show all kinds of wrestling characters. Just like the fan who dresses up like the wrestlers do in the ring and is having fun with it. There are people who are obsessed with it and there are people who come and just like to have their belief suspended.

On the very different reactions Ruth got from Debby and Sam when she told them about the television executive coming on to her in his hotel room:

CG: It was the 1980s and that’s just the way it was. If we were sitting here doing a strong “#MeToo Movement” show set now, we touch on it in a sense, but with GLOW the time period is off. It’s not there. The way it was back then was the casting couch. It was that way everywhere. Look at the show Mad Men set in the 50s and how chauvinistic it was. That was just the times, it’s the same thing. We are trying to be period correct. Especially with the “#MeToo Movement.” We are touching on that and you can see how awesome it is that it’s changing, finally.

WrestleZone will have more transcribed quotes from Chavo’s interview available tomorrow on the site.
