Austin Aries’ belt collection continues to grow, as he defeated Matt Sydal for the Impact Grand Championship on tonight’s episode of Impact Wrestling.
Aries ended up getting the title shot after he talked Sydal into defending the one Impact title he’s never held, the Grand Championship. Josh Mathews, who ‘won’ the title last week, protested the move, but Sydal put it on the line since Aries said he needed to do so to get a shot at the World Championship, referring to ‘Option C’.
Aries ended up winning the title in tonight’s main event, putting Sydal away with a Brainbuster. Sydal’s reign ends at 64 days, and Aries becomes just the fifth Grand Slam winner in Impact Wrestling history.
Aries joins AJ Styles, Abyss, Samoa Joe and Eric Young as the Grand Slam winners from Impact, but he is the first one to accomplish the feat by winning the Grand Championship (previous winners held the TNA Television Championship):
- World Championship – July 8th 2012
- World Tag Team Championship – January 25th 2013
- X Division Championship – September 11th 2011
- Grand Championship – March 29th 2018
AND NEW IMPACT Grand Champion – @AustinAries.
The brainbuster gets the job done again and The Belt Collector is gonna need a bigger suitcase for all his gold. #IMPACTonPop pic.twitter.com/oEFh4TqT82
