Tokyo Dome Matches Coming Soon
NJPW will be announcing more matches for their 1/4 Tokyo Dome show, Wrestle Kingdom 11 during a press conference streamed live on New Japan World early tomorrow morning (in the U.S.) at 3:00 am EST. The presser will be live and free, so you don’t need a NJW subscription to watch.
We already know of four title matches scheduled to take place:
- Okada vs. Kenny Omega for the IWGP Heavyweight title
- Young Bucks vs. Roppongi Vice for the Jr. Tag Team titles
- Naito vs. Tanahashi for the Intercontinental title
- Kushida vs. Hiromu Takahashi (Kamaitachi) for the IWGP Jr. title
Kenny Omega Takes Savage Shot at Top Match
It has been debated over the past few months which match would eventually headline the 1/4 Tokyo Dome show. The obvious decision would be the IWGP Heavyweight Championship match between Kazuchika Okada and G1 Climax tournament winner Kenny Omega. However, there has been talk of Tetsuya Naito asking New Japan officials for a fan vote, as he is one of the most popular stars in Japan leading the hottest faction in the world, and his match against the biggest star of the last decade, Tanahashi, might end up being the more hyped match for traditional Japanese fans.
When a fan asked Omega about the fan vote, he had a pretty killer response:
“It won’t change my effort or the prestige of the belt so I leave it to the fans. I can guarantee I’ll have the better match, though. Washed up injured guy VS the guy I had to carry to his only chance at a match over 3.5 stars? Sure, whatever you say.”
For what it’s worth, Omega is talking about matches rated by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. He worked an incredible Match of the Year candidate in the G1 Finals against Naito, who has worked an impressive 14 matches rated over 3.5 stars in 2016 alone. Omega has worked 11.
Young Bucks Insane Travel Schedule
It’s going to be quite an exhausting couple of weeks for the current reigning IWGP Jr. Tag Team Champions, Ring of Honor Tag Team Champions, and PWG Tag Team Champions, the Young Bucks. After working Saturday’s Power Struggle event in Osaka at the end of a two week tour, the duo flew home to the U.S., will be flying to New Zealand two days later, then back home for two days, immediately followed by the ROH tour in the U.K.
