Earlier this week, The Wrestling Observer reported that Alberto Del Rio’s new WWE deal calls for a downside guarantee of about $1.45 million for the next year. A downside guarantee means regardless of what might happen to Alberto Del Rio during the course of the next year, particularly where it concerns injuries or his position on the card, he is guaranteed to make at least $1.45 million in the year.

Both The Wrestling Observer and PWInsider.com have posted updates on Del Rio’s downside guarantee, and note it’s not even close to $1.45 million, and in reality that figure is likely three times what his actual downside guarantee is.
As for why Del Rio returned to WWE, the main reason appears to be money, as he simply wanted to go back to WWE after the deal with Lucha Underground fell apart.
Del Rio is still the AAA Mega Champion, and AAA could end up on the losing end of the situation as it’s very likely Vince McMahon will not allow one of his top guys to lose on another promotion’s TV show. So even though Del Rio still has AAA dates left to fulfill, it’s entirely possible he will not return to AAA at all to drop the title.
