Daniel Bryan defeated Randy Orton in the main event of Night of Champions to become the new WWE Champion, following a running knee to the head – the same move that defeated former champion John Cena. During the match, senior official Scott Armstrong took a bump and spent several minutes on the outside. When he recovered and re-entered the match, Bryan hit his new finisher and Armstrong immediately made a very fast 3-count to crown a new champion.
A second referee was involved briefly during the match, although he left shortly thereafter. While no official decision was made during the pay-per-view itself, given the controversial finish to the WWE Championship match, it is likely Triple H will raise some sort of issue with his "corporate champion" Randy Orton losing the belt in such a manner.
