A new report provides an update on John Cena‘s heel turn at WWE Elimination Chamber.
John Cena stunned wrestling fans around the world at WWE Elimination Chamber by turning heel on Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes and aligning with The Rock. The 16-time world champion had just won the Elimination Chamber to earn a shot at Rhodes at WrestleMania 41.
Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful (via Fightful Select) reports that the heel turn was largely kept a secret within WWE, with only a few need-to-know people being aware of it. Per Sapp, it came as a shock to many in the company. The report notes that John Cena and Rhodes had known that the plan was for them to face each other at WrestleMania, and there is no word on if The Rock will wrestle at the show.
As previously reported, WWE creative had been operating as if The Rock would not be wrestling at WrestleMania, and most plans for The Rock are given on a need-to-know basis.
Details On Travis Scott Being Involved In John Cena’s Heel Turn
As for Travis Scott’s involvement, the WWE Elimination Chamber poster that had John Cena, The Rock, and Scott on it was said to be intentional foreshadowing, and that Scott was planned to be part of the angle as of Friday, when the poster dropped.
Sapp also writes that there are few details on how long the angle had been firmly planned. The Rock’s previous appearance seemed inconsequential at the time, but he stated that it meant something at the WWE Elimination Chamber post-show. Per Sapp, when asked whether that appearance was a set-up for the heel turn, sources noted that they hadn’t specifically been told that, but they believed it could have been a pitch that far back. Others believed that The Rock’s intentions were intentionally kept vague to leave room to fit it into the future as necessary.
Furthermore, Sapp cites sources who believe that The Rock would be at WWE WrestleMania 41, but this was not confirmed.
John Cena is not currently advertised for the next two episodes of WWE RAW. The Rock noted that he was flying back to Africa to resume filming.
