Over a year after he was announced as an inductee into the Indie Wrestling Hall of Fame, Sabu will finally receive his plaque.
Game Changer Wrestling announced that Sabu will receive his Indie Wrestling Hall of Fame award at GCW The Coldest Winter on March 1st, and Joey Janela will present him with the award.
In 2024, Sabu said he changed his mind about attending the Indie Wrestling Hall of Fame ceremony. GCW‘s Brett Lauderdale said that Sabu had been paid for the appearance, but he stayed in his hotel room. He stated that there were no hard feelings.
Joey Janela On Sabu
Joey Janela recently discussed his upcoming match with Sabu during an interview with Fightful Overbooked’s In The Weeds.
“Sabu, I don’t know where his mind is at right now. I know he wants to do the match. He hasn’t wrestled in a few years. I know he’s a big fan of mine and GCW. We didn’t start off on always the same page. We had a match in like 2016, they did a documentary on YouTube, ‘Please Don’t Die,’ that was the focal point of the documentary, Sabu was like beat to death in this situation and couldn’t get it done in the ring.
“The match just didn’t go the way we planned. It was like, ‘Fuck. Never meet your idols, never wrestle your idols.’ At that point, I was like, ‘Fuck this guy.’ Later years, we’ve become tight. Hanging out in Las Vegas, we have mutual friends and it’s fucking Sabu. If anyone was going to get his last match, it was going to be me. I said, ‘I’ll get you through it, Sabu.’ He goes, ‘No, I’ll get you through it.’ That’s what I want to do here. He said he wants it to be his greatest match of all time. It could be.” (H/t Fightful for the transcription.)
The status of Sabu’s match with Janela is unclear, as Janela underwent surgery earlier this month. It had been announced for Joey Janela’s Spring Break 9 in April.
