One More Yeet, Por Favor

The crowd chants one more time. Jey runs his entrance back for the people. Jey stands on the commentary desk and Yeets with the crowd. All of a sudden, Jey goes down. World Heavyweight Champion Gunther spawned out of nowhere and tripped Jey off the desk. Gunther beats down Jey. The fight spills into the ring. Jey fires back.

As Gunther walks away, Jey grabs a mic and officially picks Gunther to face at WrestleMania. Gunther runs back to the ring. Jey lands a few strikes. Gunther falls off the apron. Jey lands a dive.

Grade: B

This was a great opening segment. Everyone got to Yeet, and Gunther got to make a statement. We see sneak attacks and pull-aparts all the time, but WWE often manages to make them unique. We have our first WrestleMania main event set. If this writer had to bet, John Cena will win the Elimination Chamber leading to the rumored CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns match.

Backstage, Women’s World Champion Rhea Ripley says Charlotte Flair is dragging her WrestleMania choice on to stay relevant. IYO SKY and Dakota Kai walk in. SKY says Ripley cost her WrestleMania. SKY vows to come for Ripley’s title. Ripley says she’s looking forward to it.

Damage CTRL (Iyo Sky & Dakota Kai) vs. Liv Morgan & Raquel Rodriguez

SKY and Kai are in control early. The tables turn when Kai misses a running boot out on the floor. After the break, Morgan and her bodyguard work over Kai. Morgan gets busted open after a running knee from Kai. The finish of this one came after SKY rolled through on a roll-up by Morgan into a double stomp. Over the Moonsault by SKY. SKY pins Morgan.

Winners- Damage CTRL

Grade: B

Liv’s hardcore! Liv’s hardcore! That was a surprisingly fun match. Morgan ate a nasty knee that seemed to be what busted her open. Rodriguez didn’t manage to get in the way too much here, which worked. If SKY is going to find a way to challenge Ripley, they have to build her back up as a threat.

Former NXT Women’s Champion Roxanne Perez is in the crowd to watch the next match.

Women’s Elimination Chamber Qualifying Match: Bayley vs. Women’s Intercontinental Champion Lyra Valkyria

Bayley and Valkyria trade pins. Neither woman can get the advantage. Valkyria fires up and lands a tornado DDT. Bayley counters Valkyria with a Bayley-to-Belly, and Valkyria kicks out. Valkyria and Bayley trade big moves. The finish comes when Valkyria attempts a roll up and Bayley counters into a pin of her own for the three count.

Grade: C+

Not to sound like a broken record, but Valkyria won the IC title and has done nothing but challenge for other titles. They have given her absolutely nothing to do. Why would anyone care about her or that title? It drives this writer batty. This match was good in spots (there was a lot of solid chain wrestling on both parts), but there was also a fair amount of sloppiness as well. Valkyria fell awkwardly when Bayley attempted a spinning dipsey do whatever the heck that was. Why bother putting a champion in this match if they were just going to lose? Who booked this?

Backstage, Ivy Nile confronts Valkyria. Nile wants a shot at the IC title.

The Phenomenal One

AJ Styles tells the crowd that he returned four months ago, ready to get his career on track. Unfortunately, he got injured. Styles says his journey back here was tough, but he is here to tell the WWE Universe that he is back. He’s got a long to-do list. Styles glances at the WrestleMania sign. He’s going to remind everyone that he is the Phenomenal AJ Styles. Dominik Mysterio and Carlito interrupt. The crowd drowns Mysterio out with boos, as is tradition. Mysterio says The Judgement Day runs Raw. Styles tells Mysterio he’ll always just be Rey Mysterio’s punk-a$$ kid. Mysterio tries a cheap shot. Styles avoids it. Carlito tries to save Dominik, but he ends up eating a Pelé kick. Styles drops Carlito with a Phenomenal Forearm.

Grade: C+

It’s great to see Styles back, but he got a bit lost towards the end of this. This writer isn’t mad, but we can’t act like we didn’t hear the Phenomenal One stumbling over his words. With that, it’s always nice to see Dominik get beat up, so plus one for that.

The Visionary

Seth “Freakin” Rollins is in the crowd with Jackie. Rollins says he’s going to win the Elimination Chamber match. Finn Bálor appears and says Rollins is falling apart and doesn’t have a shot when they face off in an Elimination Chamber qualifying match next week. Rollins says after next week, Bálor won’t be standing.

Grade: C+

Standard stuff from Rollins and Bálor here. At least they attempted to give us a reason other than a title shot being on the line to care about their match next week. There is a considerable amount of history between these two, which is the secret sauce to making this a bit deeper than just about a title shot.

World Tag Team Championship Match: The War Raiders (c) vs. American Made w/Ivy Nile

Brutus starts off hot and takes a moment to mock Erik. Erik runs over Brutus. Ivar and Erik land a flurry of tag team offense. Julius tacks over on Erik. Julius and Brutus take turns beating down Erik. Julius and Brutus get close near fall after a distraction from Nile, which allows them to land a superplex/top rope moonsault combo. The finish came once the War Raiders set up their finish, but Julius hit Ivar with the championship belt, causing a disqualification.

Winners- The War Raiders

Grade: B

Heck of a match. Tag team wrestling was on full display here, with each team using a bevy of tag team maneuvers, which both teams are known for. Usually, DQ finishes don’t work, but they are clearly building towards an actual title feud between these teams, which is long overdue.

CM Punk! CM Punk!

The crowd cheers as Punk notes they are on the road to WrestleMania. If you had asked him last week, he would have said he would win the Royal Rumble. It didn’t turn out that way, but he isn’t mad at Jey Uso. Jey chose to face Gunther, which leaves Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes.

Punk craps on Cena for declaring that he was in the chamber instead of qualifying for it. Punk runs down everyone else in the Chamber match and declares WrestleMania is his. Logan Paul‘s music hits, and he makes his way to the ring. Paul dumps on Punk. Punk tells Paul to worry about Mysterio tonight, and if Paul manages to win, Punk will put him to sleep at the Chamber.

Grade: B

This didn’t overstay its welcome. Punk put his junk on the table and called his shot at the Chamber, and Paul continues to be a literal heat magnet. Not that Punk needs it, but if you want to get someone over with the crowd, put them against Paul. The crowd may hate him as much as Dominik Mysterio.

Men’s Elimination Chamber Qualifying Match: Rey Mysterio vs Logan Paul

Mysterio is in control early, sending Paul out of the ring. Paul tries to drop down but gets stomped in the face. Paul counters a head scissors from Mysterio with a gut buster. Paul works over Mysterio. Mysterio lands a few strikes and goes up top. Paul cuts Mysterio off and does a backflip slam off the second rope. The finish saw Mysterio landing a 619, but Paul got his knees up for the splash. Paul blasts Mysterio with a loaded right hand and hits his new finisher, the Pulverizer (back suplex into a DDT), for the win.

Winner- Logan Paul

After the match, The New Day attacks Mysterio

Grade: B

Thankfully, this wasn’t a retread of their previous match and featured some solid action. Mysterio works well with just about anyone, so it’s not a surprise that Paul could toss Mysterio around and make this match seem why more hotly contested than it probably should have been. There was never any doubt when it came to the outcome here, but at least it was a fun ride getting there.

WWE Raw Review:

Raw was a bit uneven tonight, featuring a few solid matches (Mysterio vs. Paul and the tag title match), but the promos tonight dragged the show down a bit. The returning AJ Styles sticks out as he seemed to have some trouble finding his words tonight. As we march to Elimination Chamber, the show should ramp up to help drive home the level of importance.
