AEW Dynamite Results:
This week’s episode of AEW Dynamite kicks off with the in-ring return of Kenny Omega as he takes on Brian Cage of the Don Callis Family.
Kenny Omega vs. Brian Cage (w/ Don Callis and Lance Archer)
- The finish of the match saw Kenny Omega hit Brian Cage with the One Winged Angel to score the pinfall victory.
Winner: Kenny Omega
After the match, Kyle Fletcher hits the ring and attacks Omega with Lance Archer. This brings out Will Ospreay who evens the odds and he and Omega clear the ring. Konosuke Takeshita marches to the ring and he and Omega have a face-off and start exchanging blows. Fletcher attacks Omega from behind allowing Takeshita to get the advantage until Ospreay gets back in the ring, but both Ospreay and Omega are taken out.
Grade: A
A great match to kick off tonight’s Dynamite. It seems abundantly clear to me that Omega is gonna be the man to take the International Title away from Takeshita this year. I would imagine that would lead many to want a unification match with Kazuchika Okada and his Continental Championship at All In. Will it happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
MVP returns to the ring later tonight
A quick video package airs featuring The Hurt Syndicate who are in action later tonight against Private Party and Mark Briscoe.
We hear from The Learning Tree, who terribly hype this Saturday’s 12-man tag on AEW Collision. With this being a match many already don’t want to see, this certainly didn’t help matters.
Ricochet makes his way to the ring in a suit to speak to the audience. The crowd chants “Swerve’s House” at him. Ricochet gets upset at the fans for not letting him talk and says a picture is worth a thousand words and shows a photo with him and a bloody Swerve Strickland on the Tron.
Swerve Strickland’s music hits and Prince Nana hits Ricochet from behind with a steel chair and proceeds to dance. Strickland makes his way to the ring with a steel chain and swings it at Ricochet, but he gets away and escapes through the crowd. Swerve follows him into the crowd and Ricochet runs out of the venue and into the snow.
A vignette for Mercedes Moné airs, which recaps everything she’s done in the past week outside of the ring.
The Hurt Syndicate vs. Private Party and Mark Briscoe
- The finish of the match saw Shelton Benjamin hit Marq Quen with a Superkick to score the pinfall victory for his team.
Winners: The Hurt Syndicate
Grade: B+
Very fun trios match. It was great to see MVP back in the ring on such a big stage. Porter doesn’t look like he missed a beat and The Hurt Syndicate made a case for why they deserve a shot at the AEW World Tag Team Titles.
The rivalry between Rated FTR and the Death Riders continues
A match between The Rated R Superstar Cope and PAC is announced for next week’s episode of AEW Dynamite.
They air a quick video package showcasing the rivalry between Rated FTR and the Death Riders.
It’s announced that Swerve Strickland will face Ricochet three weeks from tonight on the February 5 episode of Dynamite from Atlanta.
Jeff Jarrett and MJF round two
Jeff Jarrett comes to the ring and says the last few weeks for him have been humbling. This brings out MJF, who tells Jarrett he’s yet to learn the definition of humbling. MJF says he gave Jarrett the opportunity of a lifetime last week and he turned him down. Jarrett says MJF was too lazy to enter the Casino Gauntlet so he tried to scheme his way back to the title.
MJF screams at Jarrett and tells him not to interrupt him before saying his lost his cool and calms down and says he’s going to tell us about the legacy of Jeff Jarrett. Friedman says Jarrett is the last thing you see before your favorite wrestling company dies. MJF calls Jarrett the definition of a pro wrestling grim reaper.
Friedman mocks Jarrett for being a recovering alcoholic and says for the health of this company and for him that he’ll send Jarrett’s ass packing back to rehab where he belongs. MJF makes jokes about Karen Jarrett and Kurt Angle, but Jarrett laughs it off. Jarrett says everything he’s said has been said before a thousand times.
Jeff Jarrett gives it to MJF straight
Jeff Jarrett says he knows his best days are behind him, but when he entered the Owen Hart Cup last year, the AEW fans lit a passion for him he didn’t even know he still had. Jarrett says he’s going to do everything he can to become AEW World Champion. Jarrett says he doesn’t know if MJF is a dumbass or a scumbag, but it might be all the above.
Jeff says MJF had a tough upbringing being raised by a call-girl mother and an ambulance-chasing father. Jarrett says all boys marry their mommy, and calls MJF’s girlfriend a Canadian call-girl. Jeff implies Friedman’s girlfriend is having sex with other wrestlers in the back.
Jarrett says MJF needs him because he’s scared of becoming a one-hit wonder. MJF says he’s nothing like him and he didn’t need his dad to make him the top guy and didn’t need to start a company to be one. Friedman takes credit for all of AEW’s success and says he doesn’t want to win the AEW World Championship, he needs to win it so he can shove it down everyone’s throat.
MJF says no wrestling fan has ever given a shit about Jarrett and just because he was best friends with Owen Hart he thinks he was owed a grand finale. Friedman says he sees through Jarrett’s bullshit and says he’s nothing more than a leech riding the coattails of his deceased friend. Jarrett gets upset and decks MJF and the two men are separated by security. Karen Jarrett gets involved and Friedman threatens to do something to her before leaving the ring.
The surprise return of Samoa Joe
HOOK vs. Christian Cage (w/ Mother Wayne)
- The finish of the match saw HOOK have Christian Cage in the Redrum and Nick Wayne and Kip Sabian jump HOOK to cause the DQ.
Winner: HOOK via disqualification
The Patriarchy attacks HOOK after the match and this leads to the surprise return of Samoa Joe who helps HOOK and Shibata take down The Patriarchy.
Grade: A-
Man, I am SO happy that Samoa Joe is back. I’ve been waiting to hear that music again for a long time. I’m fine with HOOK getting the win without Cage actually tapping out due to them trying to protect the holder of the AEW World Title contract. Honestly, all I care about is that Samoa Joe is back. I originally graded this match a B+ but I’m bumping it to an A- for the aftermath.
Dustin Rhodes has Jeff Jarrett’s back
Jeff Jarrett is backstage with Renee Paquette. Before he can say too much, Dustin Rhodes comes in and hypes him up and says he has his full support on his journey of becoming AEW World Champion.
Mariah May joins the commentary team for the Women’s Casino Gauntlet match.
Women’s Casino Gauntlet Match
Order of entry:
- Kris Statlander
- Jamie Hayter
- Megan Bayne
- Julia Hart
- Willow Nightingale
- Toni Storm
- Harley Cameron
The finish of the match saw Toni Storm catch Julia Hart in a small package to score the pinfall victory.
Winner: Toni Storm
Grade: B+
I would have liked a few more entries, but for what we got it was a very fun Casino Gauntlet match for the women. Toni Storm winning was the biggest no-brainer of the year so far. The biggest surprise during the match was the graphic revealing that this Grand Slam special will air in the slot of AEW Collision next month instead of airing live as a pay-per-view.
AEW World Championship: Jon Moxley (c) (w/ Marina Shafir) vs. Powerhouse Hobbs
- The finish of the match saw Jon Moxley lock Powerhouse Hobbs in the Bulldog Choke to win the match by knockout.
Winner: And still AEW World Champion, Jon Moxley
After the match, the Death Riders all attack Powerhouse Hobbs. Rated FTR finally make their way to the ring to help but not before they stomp Hobbs’ knee in the steel chair.
Grade: B+
Rated FTR checks on Powerhouse Hobbs as AEW Dynamite goes off the air.
AEW Dynamite Review:
This was very close to being a perfect show for me. But that overly long segment between MJF and Jeff Jarrett brought the show down a bit for me personally.
Overall, I loved this show. A lot of great action and some fun storyline progression. Despite not looking forward to the main event, I’m very excited to check out Collision on Saturday night. Let’s have this momentum continue.
Grade: A-
