QT Marshall explained how the match with Big Boom AJ came to be in AEW.
The AEW wrestler battled against the TikTok star on the AEW Full Gear pre show. While there was very few expectations of the social media star, he surprised the world with his wrestling ability once in the ring.
QT Marshall revealed in a conversation with My Mom’s Basement with Robbie Fox that Sonjay Dutt had the idea to bring Big Boom AJ in for the match. He explained how he didn’t want to take the spotlight from any of the full-time wrestlers. QT Marshall built the match up entirely on social media to avoid taking TV time away from the AEW stars.
“You know, Sonjay Dutt actually brought him up. We were talking about trying to do something for AEW that could bring new eyes to the company. One of the ideas was, okay, WWE has done really well with Logan Paul and stuff like that. So we were like, ‘Who could we find that also has a relationship with wrestling already?'” QT Marshall said.
“We looked at AJ and saw what he was doing. I’ve always stayed in touch with him—not speaking every day, but we stayed connected. We even share the same meal prep provider, Eat Clean Bro. Shout out to Jamie! Anyway, it was one of those things where we thought, ‘Hey, let’s just get him to a show, let him do some TikTok stuff, and see how it goes.'”
QT Marshall: Getting The Match Wasn’t Easy
“At that time, he was hanging out with some of the talent who weren’t featured on the pay-per-view, just backstage, and it did really well. I wasn’t there. But as a wrestler myself who doesn’t wrestle much anymore, I understand how that itch to get back in the ring never really goes away. I figured I might be able to convince him to do something.” QT Marshall said.
“I gave him a call—it wasn’t easy—but we eventually made the deal. A couple of days before we went to Barstool to sign the contract, I had this idea: I didn’t want to share the spotlight with anyone. I wanted it all for myself. That’s where the whole storyline came from.”
“AJ was gracious enough to powerbomb me at CCW down in Florida and then challenge me to a one-on-one match. In the end, everything worked out for the best—well, except for me getting the win. It’s unfortunate that he got hurt.”
