The Undertaker Thought ‘There May Be More Gas In The Tank’ After WrestleMania 36

The Undertaker looks back on the end of his in-ring career and notes that he had thought there might be more gas in the tank.

The Undertaker has discussed how he has struggled to move on from his career as an active wrestler. His last match came somewhat unexpectedly at WWE WrestleMania 36. There, he faced AJ Styles in the cinematic Boneyard Match. At times, The Undertaker previously hinted at returning to the ring, but he has since shut the idea down.

Speaking on a Patreon exclusive Q&A edition of his Six Feet Under podcast, The Undertaker reflected on his mindset heading into his match against Styles. He noted that he was not thinking ahead, but he thought there might be more “gas in the tank” after his feud with Styles. However, he also stated that he knew he was done after the match against Styles. (H/t Robert DeFelice of Fightful for the transcription)

“I wasn’t thinking ahead,” The Undertaker said. “The only thing I was thinking was, ‘There may be more gas in the tank for some other opponents,’ but I didn’t have anybody in mind. I was completely focused on AJ and the shape that I thought I was going to have to be in to have the match that I wanted to have with him, which would have been initially in a wrestling ring. So I mean, my whole focus was on that.”

The Undertaker recently said that his appearance at WWE WrestleMania 40 helped give him closure on his career. Check out his comments here.

The Undertaker Speaks Highly Of AJ Styles

On another episode of his podcast, The Undertaker praised AJ Styles. He compared the former champion to Shawn Michaels.

“[AJ Styles] checks all the boxes,” The Undertaker said.” don’t know if there will ever be another Shawn Michaels. I put a disclaimer on it, but AJ Styles can work with anybody. He can make anybody look like a million bucks and still be able to you know — AJ is not a big guy, but has the ability to work with anybody and make it believable, make it solid.

“That doesn’t make AJ Shawn Michaels, but those are the two guys that have the generation’s [highest] work level. That’s my opinion, I’m sure somebody else will have a different opinion. That’s kind of the reason why the whole Boneyard match happened is because I didn’t get a chance to work with AJ and that lured me. I really do [hold him in such high regard] as a human being and as a performer.”
