Tony Deppen is looking forward to a (Super)fight.
Deppen spoke with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard ahead of the MLW Superfight event and television tapings. There, Deppen will team with TJ Crawford and Griffin McCoy against Wasted Youth and Solo Kitano. Deppen shared his excitement for the match, noting how it follows a personal favorite that took place at MLW Kings Of Colosseum.
“I’m looking forward to it because last month, it was Wasted Youth and Alec Price versus us. And it was probably one of my favorite matches since I came back. I loved it a lot,” he pointed out. “We came up a little short, but I’ve already beaten Katana or whatever, I don’t really care what his name is. I already beat him in a singles match. So I just think that this will be easier because I already got one up on him.”
2300 Arena
MLW had made a de facto home at the 2300 Arena in recent years, running more shows there during and after the pandemic. Deppen lives in Hershey, about two hours away from the venue. Not only does it provide a chance at a “home” event, but there’s historical appeal as well.
“Well, it’s pretty much the closest I’ll ever get to wrestling near my house. So it’s pretty nice because I should get home before 1 AM, which is awesome. But it’s also really cool as well, because it’s a regular showcase in the ECW Arena,” Tony Deppen explained. “That’s really cool to me regardless if it’s no longer what it used to be or doesn’t have that same feel because it’s been modernized and not as cool looking or grungy looking. But I still think it’s awesome that on a regular basis that I get to wrestle there.”
Deppen confirmed he will be on the card for MLW’s Intimidation Games in New York City on February 29. He also hopes to be on the bill for MLW’s “War Chamber” event in Tampa, too.
“I’m hoping [I get on the March 29 Tampa show] because Tampa‘s the only redeemable spot in Florida for me. So that’d be nice to go down to Tampa again,” he quipped.
More than just a wrestler
Part of Tony Deppen’s MLW tenure has seen him get (storyline) suspended. How does he feel about being part of extended storylines in MLW despite being absent from TV for a few weeks while he serves his “suspension”?
“I really enjoy it because it shows that MLW and Court [Bauer] have some form of faith in me to push me into some type of angle instead of just saying, ‘Hey, here’s Tony Deppen the wrestler.’ Because I’m going to be realistic, there are so many guys out there, like, ‘Hey, I’m just a wrestler,’ and that’s about it. But you can only go so far when you’re just a wrestler,” Tony Deppen explained. “When you get the opportunity to showcase more than that, there’s being slimy, or if I could work on promos or something it helps develop me and push me forward as well.”
MLW Superfight takes place on Saturday, February 3 at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia.
