One of the most successful female stars in the world of professional wrestling is Maria Kanellis. Some might say that she played a major role in revolutionizing women’s wrestling. The self-proclaimed First Lady of Professional Wrestling is currently signed with AEW and ROH along with her husband Mike Kanellis and Matt Taven.
Recently, both Maria and Mike Bennett were interviewed by Iridian Ferrero for WGN Radio 720 in Chicago. During the episode, the former WWE Diva shared what was the worst advice she was ever given during her time in the pro wrestling business.
“Be patient. Just wait,” Maria said. “The business is crazy.”
Adding to it, Maria Kanellis also gave a bit of advice for the current and future stars.
“There is so much going on. There is so much you know… So many people are involved and it is so… So if you are not the squeaky wheel, I feel like it’s you’re never going to be able to capture that brass ring. And I think you have to be prepared. You have to be prepared, you have to continue to educate yourself. If you are in the ring, get better in the ring. If you are a manager, get better at doing that. Constantly be getting your name out there. Constantly be bothering people to make sure that they’re acknowledging you. I think that the squeaky wheel, especially in an industry like ours, where I think right now there’s a 150 talent in AEW. I think the squeaky wheel is the best approach,” Maria Kanellis said.
Mike Bennett decided to do the opposite of what he was advised to do
In the same episode, Maria’s husband, Mike Bennett also shared what was the worst advice he got. The former ROH World Tag Team Champion mentioned that he decided to do the exact opposite of that bad advice.
“For me, I remember I asked someone why I had to do something a certain way. And they told me, ‘Well that’s the way it’s always been done,’ and I remember thinking about that and then looking at all the people that didn’t do things the way it’s always been done and realizing that those ere the successful people. And I went, ‘Okay, that’s not very good advice. I think I’ll do the opposite of what you just told me.’” Mike Kanellis said.
