Rocky Romero has high hopes for Will Ospreay.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Romero was asked to name someone he’s proud of in NJPW. He pointed to Ospreay, the reigning IWGP United Kingdom Champion. Romero shared his belief that he will ultimately go down as one of the best of all time.
“In the beginning, I guess honestly probably somebody like Ospreay, just to see where he’s at now,” Romero said. “Initially, it wasn’t my idea to bring Ospreay in, but just that first year kind of helping him and getting his feet wet in New Japan.
“To see where he’s at now, and what an amazing performer, there’s literally nobody on this planet like him that can do the things he can do. I’m pretty proud of Ospreay, just to see where he’s at. Obviously, he’s got a ton more to go in his career and where he ends up is gonna be probably one of the top five wrestlers of all time, in my opinion.”
Rocky Romero: Will Ospreay Could Be The Face Of NJPW Internationally
In the same interview, Rocky Romero was asked if he believes Will Ospreay can become the next “ace” of NJPW. He stated that he thinks Ospreay could be the face of the company internationally.
“Yes,” Romero said. “I think that if Will continues on to work with New Japan for the next few years, that’s where Will needs to go. He needs to do what Kenny [Omega] did, but then achieve more than what Kenny did. Because Kenny’s run was somewhat short when he got the IWGP World Championship. It wasn’t the longest run, and they still had Okada as the main guy. So it was Okada first, Kenny kind of second.
“So I feel like Will could be exactly what New Japan needs to be the guy internationally, like Japan, USA, Europe, wherever. He could be the face of the company worldwide, which would obviously make the appeal so different than just Okada being the face or just Naito being the face.”
Ospreay will compete in a high-profile match at AEW All In, where he will face Chris Jericho. More information is available here.
