Mick Foley is proud of his feud with Randy Orton and went to great lengths to ensure it was successful.
During an appearance on Throwing Down w/ Renee & Miesha, Mick Foley recalled talking Randy Orton into spitting in his face when they were feuding with each other in 2004. Foley, who at that point hadn’t wrestled in nearly four years, spoke about how he first pitched McMahon on letting him enter and win the 2004 Royal Rumble. Foley said he wanted to face both the RAW and SmackDown champions and become the Undisputed WWE Champion at WrestleMania, but McMahon immediately said he had no interest in doing that.
From there, Foley pitched working with Orton, and he spoke about how the feud hinged on him having a “crisis of confidence” and walking away from the match.
“It balanced on me being the first guy to walk away from a match, just to have a crisis of confidence and basically I guess chicken out would be one expression. And Vince didn’t want me to do it. Stephanie called me up and said ‘we’re gonna have Evolution attack you,’” Foley explained. “I said why, what happened to me stepping out on the match? She said my dad doesn’t think the fans will ever forgive you. So I said okay I’m gonna call your dad. So I called Vince,” Foley explained, “and he said Mick you just work so hard, I’d hate to have the fans rebel on you that way.”
Foley then said he had to convince Orton to spit on him, but you’d never guess that “The Legend Killer” was reluctant to do so.
“I had to talk Randy into spitting on me on camera. He did not want to do it, and then he said Mick what if I just pretend, like I won’t really spit on you. I said Randy this is one of the most important moments of your career. I said you need to dig down as few into your lungs as you can, and people need to see that residue, proving that he was a gamer. When it came time to do it,” Foley noted, “you would have never guessed that he was hesitating on that. He dug it down deep and he launched that loogie and it was hanging all over me and it was awful, but it was exactly what we needed. I think that entire storyline was among the very best things that I’ve ever been part of.”
