Jay Lethal is counting the days until he gets a one-on-one match with Samoa Joe.
During an appearance on Casual Conversations, Jay Lethal discussed his relationship with Samoa Joe, who he’s currently feuding with on AEW TV. Jay Lethal, Satnam Singh and Sonjay Dutt have targeted Joe and the ROH TV Championship, but Lethal said he’s got plenty of love for Joe behind the scenes.
“I love him dearly. He — and I don’t even know why —but he took a liking to me at a very young age when I thought I knew more than I actually do. I was still trying to figure things out, and he saw that, and I don’t know, something about, and I didn’t go out hanging out with the guys after any of the shows because I traveled with my family,” Lethal explained, “so it’s not like we hung out after the shows that often and developed that bond. Really, all that he really saw of me was any time I was at the show.
“Somewhere along the way, he took a liking to me and I remember one day, he’s like, ‘where are you sitting, where’s your stuff?’ ‘My stuff’s over there.’ ‘No no, sit next to me. Nobody’s sitting here.’ And then I sat next to him, and it started out a lot of, ‘hey why are you doing that? Don’t do that.’ So in the beginning, if you’re not realizing what he’s doing, it’s a lot of ‘why am I sitting next to him? He’s just telling me what I’m doing wrong the whole time.’ But obviously, I didn’t see it that way,” Lethal said. “I knew exactly what was going on.
“And we became friends, and we would roll around in the ring sometimes before the shows. He taught me a lot about what is acceptable to take,” Lethal pointed out, “as far as people talking to you, don’t let nobody talk to you like that, or how to do talk to others, especially when it comes to wrestling and wrestling bookings and why are you doing in this in the ring, don’t do that. Or you did this well, you gotta keep doing more stuff like that. I don’t know why he did, but he took a liking to me and he helped me tremendously, and I will forever be in his debt.
Jay Lethal went on to explain that while he and Joe have shared the ring together, they have never had too many singles matches. Lethal said it might have been two total, so he’s looking forward to facing Joe with all of the skill and talent he has now.
“We never got to work singles matches together that often. I think maybe a total of two times. And the thing about it is, that was back when I didn’t know nearly as much as I know now. So I can’t wait. Seeing him back, so many things ran through my head, but one of the first things was please oh please let me get to wrestle with him one-on-one because I know way more than I knew before, and I just want to show him how much he helped me. I can’t wait to a day when we can have a singles match together. I’m really looking forward to it.”
