Bryan Danielson Compares His Current Mentorship Storyline To ‘Cobra Kai’: There’s A Lot You Can Do With It

Bryan Danielson wants to join forces with Jon Moxley and teach the next generation of wrestlers in AEW.

This storyline has captivated man fans over the past few weeks of AEW programming, and the two former AEW World Champions will clash at AEW Revolution before they potentially team up. Beyond his dynamic with Moxley, “The American Dragon” has also been focused on showcasing violence against some of the best technical wrestlers on the company’s roster, such as Daniel Garcia and Lee Moriarty. The combination of these two narrative elements has prompted many fans to dream of a potential stable that would feature Moxley and Danielson mentoring the younger wrestlers.

During an appearance on The Masked Man Show, “The American Dragon” peeled back the curtain and described his vision for the storyline. He explained how part of the motivation is to represent the stylistic clash between the past and present generations of wrestling.

“The idea would be, this is because I just talked about The Young Bucks and their style of wrestling and a lot of the older generation not getting it, right,” said Danielson. “So part of the idea is being that older generation, right, of being a guy who says like, ‘Hey, there’s too much fooling around here. Cut out the crap.’ And like Mox, you and me, we’re gonna show these kids what wrestling’s all about.

“And you take somebody like Mox who, in my mind, you think of okay, if you take the best brawler in the world and you take the best technical wrestler in the world and you put them together and then you teach these kids violence as opposed to comedy, right, and then that’s all the different ways that stories can come out of that.”

Danielson then discussed the fruitful storytelling that mentorship could produce; he referenced New Japan Pro-Wrestling and the popular show “Cobra Kai” as two examples. The former champion noted two ways he’s already tapped into this well by setting up matches with Garcia and Moriarty based on their respective mentors.

“…Like, the idea of saying 2point0, ‘You’re not good mentors to Daniel Garcia’, even though they have a lot of experience and they’re very good, that gives them some sort of thing to fight against, from a character perspective,” said Danielson. “Same thing with Matt Sydal, who’s been all over the world. So like doing that, I really like and I think it’s a good avenue for storytelling, the idea of mentorship.

“And I think it works really well in Japan. And even within like, I don’t watch a ton of television, but I’ve seen, my wife and I watched the first season of ‘Cobra Kai’, right, just like that kind of stuff, like there are fun things you can do with it, you could do, there’s all that different thing.”

Time will tell what the future holds for Danielson and his quest to mold the next generation of wrestlers in AEW.
