Mick Foley believes Windham Rotuna, formerly known as Bray Wyatt, would help any wrestling company he potentially signs with.
WWE surprisingly released the former Universal Champion on July 31; in doing so, the company put a top star on the open market. But Rotunda hasn’t popped up in wrestling ever since; instead, he’s recently been working on a feature film. Still, it’s fair to say that he’s a buzzworthy free agent in the wrestling world, and Foley, a WWE Hall of Famer, is hopeful for Rotunda’s post-WWE career.
In an interview with Alistair McGeorge of Metro, Foley stated that the man once known as Bray Wyatt would be a boost for any wrestling company. He then used the reaction Ruby Soho received upon her AEW debut as evidence that WWE stars can enjoy plenty of success elsewhere.
“Oh, wherever he decides to go will benefit from him being there,” said Foley. And that’s great to know. When somebody has success and an amazing pop and reaction – like Ruby Soho – it just shows you. Because [thinking of] mental health, you get that call from WWE that your time is up, that used to be seen as a death knell on a career.
“And now people are like, “Hey I get to go somewhere else and ply my craft”. I like the idea that there’s other places available.”
In the past, Foley has been seen as someone who has been loyal to WWE in recent years, but he has also openly criticized the company. With these frustrations in mind, Foley shared his stance that the wresting business is better when there’s strong competition between companies because it gives wrestlers options.
“It’s a strong point for the business itself,” said Foley. “There should be other places for people to go,’ he added. ‘I detested the idea that when Bill Watts was talking about it being a buyers market because I didn’t like the idea we were seen as a bunch of commodities.
“But if that’s what we are, then it’s certainly a seller’s market now because there are places to go, and different styles to do. If someone’s happy in Japan, they don’t necessarily need to take that contract.”
Time will tell what Rotunda’s future in wrestling holds, but in theory, he’ll have no shortage of places to choose to hone his craft.
