As reported by The Hollywood Reporter earlier today, WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max has given the greenlight to an eight episode first season of Peacemaker. This action comedy series stars John Cena as the DC villain and serves as a prequel to James Gunn’s The Sucicide Squad. Gunn will be writing the entire collection of eight scripts for the show and directing several of them, including the premiere.
Peacemaker was originally published in Charlton Comics in the 1960s. He’s a vigilance that believes in “peace at any cost – no matter how many people he has to kill to get it.” For wrestling fans, it’s a role reversal to see the former 16-time World Champion as a bad guy, but it’s a role that Cena has become accustomed to in Hollywood. He played a member of the military brass in Bumblebee, and he’s also set to play Dom’s villainous brother in the upcoming Fast and Furious sequel.
DC fans got a first look at John Cena as Peacemaker last month as part of the DC Fandome event. The report on Peacemaker says that the character is a favorite among WB executives, which explains the solo series and could mean bigger things for Cena should the movie and show hit the same way with audiences.
The Suicide Squad is scheduled to hit theaters on August 6, 2021. Peacemaker will hit HBO Max when it’s ready, although no release date is set.
