Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer reported via a recent episode of “Wrestling Observer Radio” with Bryan Alvarez that WWE used an unorthodox tactic in protecting Drew McIntyre on Tuesday night during his six-man tag match against The New Day.
According to Meltzer, McIntyre basically vanished from the tag team match after SmackDown cut to commercial break and the reasoning for that was WWE didn’t want McIntyre losing to be in the fans’ conscious. WWE is very adamant about making McIntyre look strong since he lost to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania.
This fact wasn’t lost on fans in attendance at the tapings either, as some said McIntyre leaving caused some confusion as to him being injured or not. According to Wrestlezone reader Mike P, McIntyre left the ring side area a few minutes before the pin fall in the main event. He left thru the timekeeper’s area and walked around the side opposite the hard-camera to the back. It was noted that he didn’t seem to be hurt (which was also confirmed in the Observer), but his seemingly ‘random’ disappearance came off as being odd to those in the crowd.
The New Day ended up defeating The Bar (and McIntyre) in the six-man tag match on this week’s SmackDown Live.
