Kofi Kingston was on SiriusXM’s Busted Open Radio. He responded to criticism from people like Jim Ross who complained about race coming into his storyline. Kingston explained that while his “people like us” comments do bring up race, it’s a broader topic.
“We left it open-ended for a reason, and it means a lot of different things. For example, myself, I wear pigtails in the ring. I wear pink. I skip. I clap. I twerk. You know what I mean? And you don’t see someone like that in the main event scene. There’s obviously the element of race concerned in it, right? You haven’t seen many African-American champions hold major titles. That is definitely a big piece in it. What’s awesome about this storyline is that so many people can identify with it. Whether it be people like black children that are seeing black men do excellent things … but also, it transcends race and this is an 11-year journey. People like us, who work as hard as they can and are told no … people who are always climbing obstacles to find more mountains and have to climb again. It’s everybody who has struggled and has had a difficult time getting to be where they want to be.”

A lot has been made of the phrase "people like us" when it comes to the #KofiMania story heading into #WrestleMania but @TrueKofi says it was left open ended for a reason. pic.twitter.com/pDO5IobfIF
